Hi everyone! I am Sarah Berry, the Complex Manager for the Waddell & Reed Oregon Market. I have loved finance since a young age all starting with investing in my first stock with my dad in middle school. He taught me how to track our purchase in the Wall Street Journal and I was hooked. As I grew older I started to realize that money can do crazy things to people, even break up relationships. It became my mission to help people so that these things do not happen.
I was approached my Freshman year of college to start as an intern at various financial service companies since I would read my Wall Street Journal in between customers at my coffee cart. The finance people though that it was funny. I decided to go with an independent firm, Raymond James Financial Services (RJFS) and ended up working with one of the top female advisors in the country. She was a great mentor and after a couple months hired me on full time to run her trade desk. She even allowed me to get licensed with my Series 7 & 66 during summer break prior to my junior year in college. After graduating from the University of Oregon I moved up to Portland and stayed with RJFS for 12 years, taking my Series 24 exam to become a registered principal in 2007. I was a producing manager until my departure from RJFS.
I realized that I wanted to make a change for two important reasons. Running a traditional independent office is extremely hard due to the amount of busy work it takes, plus I wanted a better culture that considered individual client needs and was focused on financial planning. Luckily, I met Jim Latham my previous Regional Vice President, and he told me about the supported independent structure here at Waddell & Reed. I loved the idea of taking this business busy work of the plates of the advisors so they could focus on meeting with clients and that they still owned their books of business. I thought this was a great combo. In terms of culture, I had to just trust Jim on that one and sure enough there were many other wonderful people at this company just like him that I now have the honor of working with.
Now it has been over 5 years I have spent with Waddell & Reed and I am so pleased to call this place my home. I feel strongly about the good work we do in the community which is deeply rooted in financial planning. As the new Complex Manager of the Oregon Market, I look forward to supporting our advisors, employees and clients.
In my time away from work I am the proud mother of one daughter Isabella and she is almost four. I have been married to my husband Cedric for 5 years and he owns a State Farm Insurance Agency in downtown Portland. I enjoy exercising at Barre3 most mornings at 6am or hit a Burncycle spin class. I also love to cook, and have a great passion for traveling. I am actively involved in various charities including Children’s Cancer Association, Downtown Portland Rotary Enterprise Academy & The Maurice Lucas Foundation and believe strongly in giving back to our community.
